Mark E. NewmanChief Operating Officer
As the recently-promoted COO of The Chemours Company, Mark is uniquely qualified to help drive operational excellence and unlock the value embedded across Chemours' entire roster of industry-leading businesses.
Mark E. Newman oversees operations for Chemours. He joined the company—then a subsidiary of DuPont—in 2014. As the senior vice president and CFO, he helped lead the transition to launch Chemours as a stand-alone, publicly traded company. Now as its newest COO, he'll leverage his diverse experience to guide Chemours to achieve its next goal: to become an industry-leading chemistry company.
Q: How does a company like Chemours create value?
A: Historically, our businesses have generated considerable free cash flow. If we can combine that with a more entrepreneurial approach, I believe we can put that cash into the business in ways that will generate shareholder value.
Q: How do you ensure that a company continues to grow and prosper?
A: When you think of top-line growth, my view is that our first order of business is to ensure we are getting everything we can from the existing portfolio, both in terms of logical product extensions and running the portfolio efficiently.
Q: What was your first job?
A: I grew up on a sugar cane and citrus farm in Jamaica, and one of my first jobs was mowing the citrus groves. One day I was in a hurry and didn’t do a very good job. My father said, "You realize, everybody knows you cut this field." The next morning, I went back and redid it. It’s a lesson that stuck with me.
Prior to joining Chemours as its SVP and CFO in 2014, Mark was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of SunCoke Energy, Inc., a company that makes coke—a solid fuel used in steel manufacture. He oversaw strategy, business development, and information technology at SunCoke, and led the full separation of the business from its parent, Sunoco. Mark directed the company’s initial public offering (IPO) in July 2011. His contributions facilitated a major business restructuring which led to the IPO of the first coke-making master limited partnership, SunCoke Energy Partners, in January 2013. He also served on the SunCoke Energy Partners board.
Before joining SunCoke, Mark served in a number of senior operating and finance leadership roles in the United States and China, primarily with General Motors Corporation, where he began his career in 1986. Named one of the “ Most Influential People in Auto Dealership Marketing” by Dealer Marketing Magazine, he received multiple General Motors Chairman’s Honor Awards during his tenure with the global automaker.
Mark received his Bachelor of Applied Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, where he received a General Motors Fellowship.
Mark serves on the board of directors for Altria Group, Inc., and is the executive sponsor of the Chemours Black Employee Network and a member of the Ivey Society, based on Richard Ivey alumnus activity.
