The materials produced at Fayetteville Works are critical to the state’s economy and the nation’s economy. Every airplane, automobile, cell phone, and communication device requires fluoropolymers. Fayetteville Works is one of the sites that enables this chemistry.

We have invested more than $100 million in new technologies that have significantly reduced byproducts, reduced waste, and reduced leftover materials.

The quality of life for all our communities begins with a quality environment

Our state-of-the-art Thermal Oxidizer technology was implemented to control and reduce PFAS emissions from the Fayetteville processes. The additional benefit is a reduction of >500,000 metric tons of Green House Gas compounds. This facility continues to operate at an efficiency of 99.99%.

At our Fayetteville site, we are deeply committed to manufacturing our products responsibly. Our commitment to responsible manufacturing includes reducing emissions, waste, and water use, as well as developing more sustainable products in our portfolio. We have invested significantly and implemented industry-leading steps to limit emissions and remediate historical emissions.

We are the only company in North Carolina to have made such a significant investment in this type of technology. The world depends on our products, and we are committed to manufacturing these products in a responsible manner.

Cape Fear River barrier wall: our progress

We have made significant progress on meeting our commitments to North Carolina on PFAS reductions and to our Corporate Responsibility Commitment goals, which have become part of the strategy, culture, and day-to-day operations of Fayetteville Works.

Working with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Chemours has completed the design and construction of an underground barrier wall adjacent to the Cape Fear River that spans over one mile and extends as deep as 100 feet sub-surface. The barrier wall works in conjunction with a state-of-the-art groundwater extraction and treatment system designed to remove more than 99% of the captured PFAS compounds. This system is reducing the amount of PFAS compounds reaching the river.

Fayetteville Works is a manufacturer of Nafion™ membranes, used in flow batteries energy storage as well as ion exchange membranes used to harness hydrogen as fuel.

  • What have you contributed to the local environment and habitat?

    Sustainability is at the heart of our manufacturing operation, and we’ve implemented industry-leading emissions controls to protect our shared environment. In 2018, we made a commitment to spend over $100 million at the Fayetteville Works site to make a best-in-class facility with respect to air and wastewater emission control by investing in a thermal oxidizer and a thermolysis reactor. With this technology, the Fayetteville site will achieve the goal of an overall 99% reduction of air and water emissions of HFPO-Dimer Acid and other PFAS compounds. Our thermal oxidizer is over 99.99% efficient at destroying PFAS.

  • What role do you play in the local community?

    We care about people and are committed to being a good neighbor by investing in the community and improving the environment around us. We’re increasing opportunities for people in our community through better access to science and technical education for students and by providing career opportunities in the field. We work closely with our local United Way chapters to support those in need, and we’re currently working to coordinate our annual day of service. Our site supports STEM activities in the community through participation in a STEM summer camp at the Fayetteville Science Academy and maintaining strong relationships with Bladen Community College and Cumberland County schools. We are an active participant in the Cumberland County School ICON Program, which matches interns to local employers for the summer to gain professional experience. We’re actively working with Cumberland County to create a ChemFEST partnership in the county.
