Our commitment to product stewardship

Every day we each see many examples of Product Stewardship. There are so many that we often take them for granted, such as: ingredient labels on food and other packaging; warning labels on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products; tamper-resistant packaging. The common element in each is product responsibility or stewardship by the product's manufacturer.

Chemours defines product stewardship as: "An integrated business process for identifying, managing, and reducing safety, health, and environmental risk throughout all stages of a product's life in the best interest of our four stakeholders: customers, employees, shareholders, and society."

Our product stewardship program objectives are to:
  • Use our understanding of our products to protect our customers, our employees, our community, and the public
  • Anticipate and respond to societal expectations and requirements
  • Minimize resource and energy consumption
Product stewardship is not new at Chemours. What is new is our plan to help our customers, suppliers, vendors, and distributors achieve their own product stewardship objectives. We will work with you to integrate product stewardship considerations into your day-to-day business decisions. This will involve understanding each other's goals and how each group can positively contribute to the success of a product stewardship program. The Chemours goal in doing this is to achieve improved performance across the entire value chain.

As product stewardship principles are integrated throughout the value chain, we will see a shift away from traditional disposal and waste management thinking toward resource conservation and life cycle thinking. The result will be improved product and business sustainability, which benefits each of the stakeholders.

Product stewardship is one component of the American Chemical Council (ACC) and the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) Responsible Care™ program. Chemours is a member of both ACC and CEFIC and is fully committed to implementing product stewardship throughout our businesses.

FIBC return program 
Our titanium dioxide package recovery program enables customers to return empty flexible intermediate bulk containers at our expense. Customers can decrease on-site waste volume, lower waste disposal costs, and reduce the volume of scrapped materials in their local landfills.

Waste-free packaging for paper grades
Chemours paper grades are available in "batch includable paper" bags. The special bag components allow the bags and their contents to be included in the customer's process, eliminating empty bag disposal. Several features make "waste-free" packaging possible:
  • special "beater" quality paper
  • water-soluble inks for bag graphics.
The paper must pass several very stringent quality checks before it is used to make the bags. These include a very narrow pH range of the paper, absence of wood shives and other foreign particles, and certain minimum strength requirements.

Slurry Grades 
Chemours supplies titanium dioxide to the coatings and paper markets in a high solids aqueous slurry form. Delivery is by railroad tanker car and truck tanker shipments, so our slurry shipments are considered "waste-free." Our customers simply make their process connections to our tankers and unload the product. This shipment method is very popular with our customers: it not only totally eliminates package waste associated with dry product, but also provides substantial quality and cost advantages.

Waste-free packaging for plastics grades
Chemours plastics grades are available in "batch-includable plastic" bags. The special film structure allows the bags and their contents to be included in the customer's process, eliminating empty bag disposal. Several features make "waste-free" packaging possible:
  • Melting and softening points of the polymer
  • Particle sizes and structure of any additives
  • 100% heat fusion of bag seams with no adhesives
