Opteon™ YF (HFO-1234yf) is a mildly flammable (as measured by ASTM E681) refrigerant for use in automotive air-conditioning. It is difficult to ignite and has slow flame propagation (1.5 cm/sec). Independent laboratories have run extensive testing and concluded that the risks associated with Opteon™ YF (HFO-1234yf) flammability did not need to be mitigated by significant system redesign (e.g., secondary loop).

Opteon™ YF (HFO-1234yf) has been evaluated by independent laboratories for acute toxicity and long term toxicity. It features low acute toxicity similar to HFC-134a. Long-term toxicity results to date are also favorable and requirements at manufacturing sites or service centers (occupational health) are expected to be similar to current refrigerant.
Acute toxicity tests are conducted to evaluate the adverse effects produced by a single exposure to the test substance. Acute toxicity data is useful for understanding likely impact of inadvertent/accidental substance releases. Acute tests are generally conducted by exposing laboratory animals via the most likely route of exposure. For example highly volatile compounds are tested via inhalation, rather than by a dermal or oral route. Acute toxicity tests are generally in the first tier of toxicity testing.
