» R-22 Replacement
There are potentially 3 possible R-22 retrofit options available, Freon™ MO29, Freon™ MO59 and Freon™ MO99.Freon™ MO29 Freon™ MO29
has been the most widely used R-22 retrofit option in Europe since 2006. Freon™ MO29 can provide a cooling capacity close to R22 for air conditioning, medium and low temperature refrigeration applications. In a small number of cases the higher mass flow experienced with Freon™ MO29 may require a change of orifice or expansion valve to achieve the optimum performance post retrofit. For many direct expansion (DX) systems Freon™ MO29 may be used with mineral, alkyl benzene or POE based lubricants and operates with a compressor discharge temperature significantly less than R-22 which may be beneficial for compressor operation.Freon™ MO59 Freon™ MO59
was the first non-ozone depleting R-22 retrofit option to be commercialised in 1998 but was largely superseded by the introduction of Freon™ MO29. It has a lower cooling capacity than Freon™ MO29 but a superior energy efficiency as well as pressures lower than both Freon™ MO29 and R-22 and so has continued to be used in applications where energy efficiency has been more important than cooling capacity or where lower condensing pressures are a benefit. As with Freon™ MO29, in many (DX) systems Freon™ MO59 may be used with mineral, alkyl benzene or POE based lubricants and operates with a compressor discharge temperature significantly less than R-22 which may be beneficial for compressor operation.Freon™ MO99 Freon™ MO99
is the newest addition to the Freon™ family of refrigerants and has proven to be the most versatile refrigerant for replacing R-22 in direct expansion (DX) commercial and residential air conditioning, medium- and low-temperature commercial refrigeration, and DX water chiller systems with positive displacement compressors. Freon™ MO99 has a similar cooling capacity to Freon™ MO29, similar energy efficiency to Freon™ MO59 and a mass flow close enough to R22 to make it likely that an expansion valve change would not be necessary. As with all the Freon™ MO refrigerant range Freon™ MO99 may be used with mineral, alkyl benzene or POE based lubricants making it the ideal R-22 retrofit choice.
