We adhere to the highest standards for the safe operation of facilities and the protection of the environment, our employees, our customers and the people of the communities in which we do business.
Safety and Health
We believe that all injuries and occupational illnesses, as well as safety and environmental incidents, are preventable, and our goal for all of them is zero. The site has earned the "Sentinels of Safety" award from the Mine Safety and Health Administration 18 times!
Environmental performance is a critical priority of our operations. It begins with conducting thorough assessments of land to be mined to ensure we can replace vegetation, topsoil and wetlands as we found them.
Mining and processing equipment is designed and built to perform better than federal environmental standards and generate minimal waste product.
All water is treated and released in alignment with applicable permits. The site was awarded the 2007 DuPont Sustainable Growth Award for environmental excellence.
Over the past ten years, the Florida Plant team has reduced groundwater consumption by greater than 65%. Three years ago, the team was also instrumental in implementing a project to redirect a portion of the site's treated water to the Etonia Creek basin. Since the line was installed, more than 300 million gallons have been redirected to the drought stricken Keystone Heights area lakes.
Land Use and Replanting
As soon as mining is complete, all land is returned to productive use as forests, wetlands and wildlife habitat. There are no chemicals used to extract the minerals, no pits left behind and no land overburden or waste. 97% to 98% of the sand is returned to the land within minutes. The sand that is returned is re-contoured and the topsoil is replaced. Native grasses are re-established, and within one to two years, tree seedlings are planted and wetlands are restored.
